What is water? For science, it is H₂O, an essential molecule for life. For economics, it is a resource. For engineering, a flow to be managed. But what if water were more than that? What if it were, above all, a source of wisdom?
It is from this question
that Hydrosophy is born. A term that is not yet in dictionaries, but which
pulsates in its meaning: "Hydro," from the Greek, for water.
"Sophia," for wisdom. It is not about replacing Hydrology – the
science that studies water – but about complementing it. While Hydrology gives
us the data, the measurements, the mathematical models, Hydrosophy invites us
to look at our relationship with this substance.
It is a call to go beyond
pure rationalism. Hydrosophy integrates ethics, culture, spirituality and art.
It recovers the understanding of the original peoples, who have always seen
rivers as living and sacred beings. It listens to the lesson of Genesis, which
describes the Spirit of God hovering over the primordial waters before any
other form of life, reminding us of our common origin in the liquid womb of the
planet.
The proposal of Hydrosophy
is a change of mindset towards a hydrocentric vision. This means placing water
at the center of our understanding of the world, and not the human being.
Instead of trying to dominate the water cycles, Hydrosophy teaches us to
reorganize our societies based on them, honoring their logic of flow,
permeability and regeneration.
And what does this mean in
practice? It means realizing that we are water. Water is not something external
to us. It circulates in our bodies, composing our own biology. When we look at
a river, we are not looking at something separate from ourselves, but at an
extension of what we are. This understanding generates a bond of communion, not
exploitation.
We can understand this
journey through a pyramid with four steps, the Pyramid of Hydro-Wisdom:
• Data: These are the raw
numbers. "It rained 20mm."
• Information: This is the
contextualized data. "The average rainfall in November is 25mm."
• Knowledge: This is the
application of information. "This rain is enough to fill our
reservoirs."
• And finally, Wisdom: This
is the ethical and compassionate application of knowledge. "Let's use this
water consciously, ensuring that there is enough for everyone, today and in the
future, protecting the springs and honoring this gift."
The Water Mutirão, inspired
by the logic of the Climate Mutirão that took shape at COP-30 in Belém, is the
materialization of Hydrosophy. It is the understanding that water security is
the basis of all security – food, energy, health, economic, and social. And
that fragmented management is one of the greatest threats to our future.
Therefore, Hydrosophy is not
an abstract concept for academics. It is an invitation for each of us. It is
drinking a glass of water with gratitude. It is perceiving the rain not as a
nuisance, but as a blessing that sustains life. It is understanding that the
water that flows in our veins is the same that runs in the rivers, that
evaporates to form the clouds, and that returns to nourish the earth.
It's a shift in
consciousness: from hydro-alienation – where water is merely a distant resource
– to hydro-consciousness – where we perceive our intimate connection with the
cycle of life.
May we, together, become
hydro-sophists. People who not only use water, but who understand it, respect
it, and honor it. Because ensuring that the planet's waters continue to flow,
clear and abundant, is perhaps the most urgent and beautiful expression of
wisdom of our time.
